I recently took a phone call from a customer who was making some enquires about the EPA capsules for mental health purposes, so naturally I had to ask a few personal questions to try and get to the bottom of what the problem was and whether not in my opinion the capsules would be of any help.

What was interesting about this was that after much questioning and digging around, it became apparent that this person suffered from chronic indigestion and very poor bowel movements (I am not sure which way round the IBS symptoms were).  This person thought that by getting their mental health sorted, this would in turn help with their bowel – stomach – indigestion problems (this is something that they had already seen their doctor for and had received some kind of indigestion medication).

When I suggested that it could be the other way round, i.e. that if they sorted out their stomach problems then the mood swings etc might clear up or at least be a damn sight better then they are now, the customer was very interested in this and asked what the rational behind this was.

I went on to explain that although I am not a doctor I am someone who has suffered with both these problems myself, this was mainly caused by really bad food intolerance, food allergies and a severe Candida problem. (Please no emails telling me Candida does not exist!  I have just recently come back from an exhibition at the royal botanical gardens in Edinburgh called “the amazing world of fungi” where they had a whole section about Candida albicans and the dangers if this fungi- bacteria  gets out of balance in the body!)

In fact I would go as far to say that once the Candida was under control the food allergies were so much better than they had ever been!! When you research these problems in-depth you will find that food allergies and bowel inflammation can cause the tiny virili that absorb food in the bowel to “flatten”, so once the virili are flattened the body finds it very hard to absorb nutrients, add to this a really unhealthy over growth of “bad bacteria” i.e. Candida, (in the bowel) and you have a recipe for disaster!

So, hence the body is now potentially in a state of possible permanent inflammation and hardly any nutrients are being absorbed, it’s no wonder that you could end up with multiple problems including mental health problems.

If you are still unsure why a lack of correct nutrients can cause these problems then look at it this way, if you put diesel in a petrol car then the car will stop working properly, the body is the same, it needs a fine balance of nutrients and water to function correctly and if you disturb this balance enough then it could give you problems!

I went on to ask about the customer’s diet and they replied that their diet was really good and healthy, but yet they still suffered from chronic indigestion and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) symptoms, so I suggested that they take a test for Candida over growth and that food allergy testing was also looked into.

We went on to discuss food allergies in some depth and what allergies there could be. I was quite straight forward and said it could be anything! Absolutely anything!  Spices, sugar, wheat, dairy .. You can take your pick when it comes to being allergic or not tolerant to something!

So the conversation progressed to the customer also saying that they had a quite bad energy crash later in the day (not surprising when you take into account the possibilities mentioned above, notice the word possibilities as without testing you are walking around blind) so I suggested a diet regime change to see if that helped. I recommended starting the day with a little bit of sugar free cereal and a homemade power shake packed to the brim with whole natural “super foods” as this again is something that I do and it works very well for me!

I personally mix hemp seeds, Chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds with a little bit of soy and pea protein powered with added vitamins. The brand I use is Natures Own as it is dairy and gluten free.  I blend the seeds to a fine powder and then add water or rice milk. As I do a lot of sport I need quite a lot of protein for my muscle to repair in time for the next session so I take two of these types of protein power shakes per day.  I try to avoid refined sugar or sugar or any kind due to the Candida (once you are prone to Candida it is very hard to keep it under control and it just loves sugar!)

Another area to give some serious consideration to if you are having stomach – bowel problems is the bacteria H pylori, but that’s for another newsletter.

From a personal point of view when my bowels and stomach feel balanced and I feel like I am getting all the correct nutrients then I also notice a vast improvement in the following symptoms, mood swings, headaches, anxiety and irritability. I also have better quality sleep, amazing skin and hair and enjoy a huge boost to my overall energy levels.

So the moral is if you give your body the right high quality fuel at the right time and also find out if there is something that is upsetting your stomach then your mental and overall physical health might just improve !!

Scientists say Omega 3 should be taken daily by Britons

EATING oily fish can help ensure a long life as it slashes the risk of heart failure by a third, scientists have discovered.

As a result, they say the fatty acid found in fish oil, omega 3, should now be taken daily by everyone in Britain.

Oily fish has long been known to help those with existing heart problems, but just 500mg a day – the equivalent of two three-ounce portions a week – could also cut the risk for healthy people.

The “compelling” new evidence could reduce heart attack deaths in the UK by up to 30 per cent – without a need for extra medication.

Heart disease is still the country’s biggest killer and scientists at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans looked back at 30 years of research.

They say people with existing heart problems should take “at least 800 to 1,000mg” of omega 3 each day – the amount found in three to four 3oz portions of oily fish a week.

Half that amount of fish would provide enough omega 3 for healthy people – the equivalent of one supplement capsule.

Although the substance is considered an “essential fatty acid”, omega 3 is not produced naturally by the body, and therefore it can only be obtained through diet or supplements.

The Food Standards Agency recommends mackerel, tuna and herring as the best source of the oil, which according to previous studies can also protect against strokes and cancer.

But it has previously sounded warnings about eating too much oily fish, claiming that it can contain low levels of pollutants that might build up in the body.

Experts say there is no harm in men and most women eating four portions of fish a week, but girls and women who might later have a baby and those who are pregnant or breast-feeding should limit their intake to two portions a week.

Dr Carl Lavie, who led the study which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, said: “This isn’t just hype.

“We now have tremendous and compelling evidence from very large studies … that demonstrates the protective benefits of omega 3 fish oil in multiple aspects of preventive cardiology.

“And we are talking about a very safe and relatively inexpensive therapy.”
Last night the findings were hailed as a true breakthrough in tackling heart disease, which kills 200,000 people a year in the UK. Around 275,000 Britons suffer heart attacks each year.

Nutritionist Carina Norris said: “This is great – very welcome research. It shows that omega 3 is one of the closest things to a true superfood.

“It is involved in so many areas of health, especially the heart and brain, and it is really good news that they have now found it can also reduce the risk of heart attacks in healthy people as well as those with existing heart problems. Those who don’t like fish can just take a supplement instead.”

The British Heart Foundation welcomed the research last night and Linda Main, dietician at the charity Heart UK, said: “These findings could be a radical way of cutting heart attacks.”

But she warned that adding omega 3 to a diet needed to be coupled with overall healthier eating.

Omega 3 is an essential part of good health.  The all round benefits are too many to mention, mainly because it works behind the scenes.  The long term benefits go un-noticed as the effect is not immediate, so therefore people lose interest.  This is essentially a fatal mistake.  By fatal, we don’t mean it is life-threatening, we mean that you you are not preserving your future.  By not preserving, nobody really knows how many years it could add to your life, or perhaps benefit arthritis in our latter years; But most importantly preserving your heart!

You need to understand the importance of this product.  Once you start heart problems, it may be very difficult to try to bring those problems back to normality.
